Downey House, Wesleyan University, Middletown

The 13,000 square foot Downey House was renovated to include offices, classrooms, and conference rooms for the University's Humanities Department. Designedin the Italianate Style and constructed circa 1842, it served as a meeting hall and dining room. In the early 1930's, a one story brick Colonial Revival addition was built to wrap around the southeast corner of the original building.

The adaptive re-use goals created a more functional square footage for an intellectually centered learning environment. We redesigned the 30's addition to complement the original structure in a cohesive style. The interior restorations complied with Middletown's Downtown Village District, which regulates and strictly limits the altering of the exterior of any historic structure.
