Renovation and addition enhance picturesque Shepaug River property
Kenneth Boroson Architects was retained by the owners of a 1920s-era residence to design an addition and renovations to numerous areas within the home. One of the family’s goals was to maximize the picturesque views of the Shepaug River along many treed acres in Connecticut’s Litchfield County.
The project was completed in several phases, including during the pandemic.
The first phase included the redesign of the lower level to accommodate a family room with a new bar and TV area with custom built-ins. Also added or remodeled on the lower level were a wine room, office, gym, laundry, and storage areas. A traditional wood-burning brick and stone fireplace was transformed into a contemporary tile-clad gas fireplace.
The second phase consisted of a glass-walled addition to the kitchen, conversion of a screened porch to a four-season sunroom, and a large garden house complete with kitchen, bar, and lounge areas.
As part of the kitchen addition, a foldable glass wall was installed to allow unobstructed views of the river. This feature was repeated across the property with the garden house. Half of the walls are full-height folding glass walls, which allows for the interior to expand directly into the landscape when the walls are open. Or when the walls are closed, the beautiful views of the countryside can be enjoyed from the interior.
New landscaping throughout the yard includes patios, extensive plantings, and a walkway to a trellised upper patio with extensive views of the property. The upper patio includes an outdoor kitchen/barbeque, a fire pit, and areas for eating and lounging.
